2011’s landmark exhibition on the Golden Temple was our big launch of the GT1588 initiative. And what an event that was.
However, it also gave us a problem: having set ourselves such a high bar, how on earth were we going to top that?
Thankfully, 2012 turned out to be an equally busy and successful year for the GT1588 Team – here are some of the highlights:
Reflections on a Landmark Publication
January saw the keenly awaited arrival of the Golden Temple of Amritsar: Reflections of the Past (1808-1959). It has been promoted across the globe, with copies being received by Presidents, Prime Ministers and a host of celebs. More importantly it has found a warm welcome amongst the public and has been described as ‘a must for every Sikh household’.
Warrior Saints: The Return of a Classic
1999’s groundbreaking book Warrior Saints was given a major overhaul this year. The out-of-print classic now fetches upwards of £250, beyond the reach of most. One of our key aims is to ensure that our history and traditions are available to everyone.
With that in mind we set about revising, expanding and redesigning what has become the standard text on the Sikh warrior tradition to enable a new generation of readers to learn and engage with this inspirational history.
Many hundreds of hours of research later, and following the discovery of many new illustrations and historical facts, the outcome is an entirely new book.
Beautifully illustrated and full of evocative eyewitness accounts, Warrior Saints: Four Centuries of Sikh Military History (Volume 1) tells the stirring account of the evolution and enduring prowess of the Sikh warrior.
As well as the standard version we are releasing a special limited edition of just 400 copies aimed at the avid collector as well as those who wish to show extra support for our work.
Sikhs in the Great War: We Will Remember Them
2014 will see a nationwide commemoration of the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. To ensure that the Sikh story is told, and told well, we spent much of this year planning an exciting major project to share our story with the wider world.
Our centenary project will include our second major exhibition and the chance for you to help shape all aspects of this once-in-a-lifetime event. With an initial support received from Heritage Lottery fund (HLF) we’ll be working towards a full grant next year – look out for further announcements including how you can get involved.

Dream Big: A new era in Sikh publishing – new authors, new titles, new ambitions
At GT1588 we’re keen to extend the reach of our history and heritage to anyone with an interest in our amazingly rich inheritance. Part of that remit has led to us to link up with world class experts to tell our stories to the wider world.
We’re delighted to say that in 2012 we secured an exclusive agreement with a major British historian to work on a fascinating swashbuckling story relating to the times of the Sikh Empire. We can’t disclose any more details as yet, but rest assured more will be revealed in 2013!
